Donations Strengthen Settles Hotel Restoration Efforts, Search Continues.
Big Spring, Texas - The Settles Hotel Development Company, LLC, (SHDC) today announced that it has acquired several key historic items original to the Settles Hotel.
The original number three telephone booth, a fixture of the hotel lobby for many years, was donated by the family of local resident and City of Big Spring Councilman Manuel Ramirez, Jr. According to SHDC Manager, G. Brint Ryan, "We are excited to receive such an impressive gift from Mr. Ramirez, Jr. and would like to express our appreciation to those individuals responsible for the preservation of these historic pieces. Without these efforts, the complete restoration of the Settles Hotel would not be possible."
In addition to the telephone booth, SHDC has acquired one of the original lobby desks that is in near mint condition. SHDC officials thank the Grover and Irene Springer family, of Martin County, for their very generous contribution. Other items included a framed photograph of the Settles Hotel during the 1930's and four original exterior doors, gifted by local residents Jerry Worthy and Bob Noyes respectively.
Additionally, the Hertiage Museum Board has finalized plans to return the original hotel lobby chandelier and negotiations continue regarding the return of the number one telephone booth and switchboard, which are currently on display at the Heritage Museum.
The search for original building materials is an ongoing process and SHDC will consider purchasing such materials from individuals and businesses that are in possession of such items. According to Mr. Ryan, "SHDC is interested in original building pieces, such as marble flooring, wrought iron railings, and doors, as well as furnishings, dinnerware, or other original items marked with the Settles Hotel logo."
